Battle at Kruger video

The YouTubetm video Battle at Kruger has become one of the most famous and talked about wildlife sightings in the Kruger National Park. Filmed by David Budzinski at the Transport Dam, a waterhole between Skukuza camp and Pretoriuskop camp, the Battle at Kruger video shows the dramatic interaction between a pride of lions, a herd of buffalo and a hungry crocodile.

The video has been viewed almost 50 million times on YouTube, making it one of the most viewed YouTube videos of all time. The 8 minute video has been featured extensively in the media and has even become the subject of a National Geographic documentary.

Can we also see that?

This is one of the questions we often get in response to this video, and of course the answer is yes you can, if you are extremely lucky. There is no doubt that this type of drama often plays itself out in the bush, but usually unseen by tourists. As with all great wildlife sightings, it is a case of being at the right place at the right time. Simon (our senior safari guide) has in fact seen a similar sighting not very far from where the Battle at Kruger video was filmed, but without the crocodile. A pride of lions had caught a buffalo calf, which was then rescued by the rest of the herd, only to be caught by the lions again. But alas, none of the guests on our vehicle had captured the sighting on video camera!

A sighting like this is however a very rare occurrence, and you can consider yourself very privileged if you have witnessed an unfolding drama like this in the wild. But this is why we love the Kruger Park so much and why people keep coming back - always in search of more amazing wildlife sightings, because you never know what you might see!

And of course, my personal opinion is still that watching a single lion or buffalo or any other animal in the wild, on your own safari, is better than watching a dramatic video about someone else's safari on the internet! I have spent many hours just sitting at the Transport Dam (and other similar waterholes), enjoying the silence, perhaps watching some waterbuck or elephants or fish eagles, and soaking up the tranquility and wild beauty of the Kruger National Park. It's not only the battles at Kruger that make a safari worthwhile... but bring your video camera just in case!
