Victoria Falls

Background Information

The Victoria Falls were discovered by famous missionary and explorer David Livingstone in 1855, and the locals call it “the smoke that thunders”. It is one of the seven wonders of the world and deservedly is one of the top tourist destinations in Southern Africa. Close to where Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia meet, the mighty Zambezi River plummets 108m into the narrow, winding gorge below, creating a truly spectacular waterfall curtain, especially at high water levels (typically between March and July).

You can visit the falls from the Zimbabwean side (the town is called Victoria Falls) or from the Zambian side (the town is called Livingstone). Generally both sides have well-developed tourism infrastructure, with a range of different lodges and hotels. A wide range of day tours and activities is available on either side.

Victoria Falls has a number of excellent hotels and lodges on both sides of the Falls. We can put together a package for you that includes flights from South Africa, accommodation, airport transfers, and a variety of activities and day trips in the area. Please note that Victoria Falls is a 1 hour 50 minute flight from Johannesburg, and you can not travel directly between the Kruger Park and Victoria Falls on the same day. Normally a one-night stopover is required in Johannesburg, due to flight times.
