MalaMala Game Reserve

Probably the most famous of private game lodges is MalaMala Game Reserve in the Sabi Sands, part of the greater Kruger National Park. MalaMala owns the largest tract of prime game viewing land and therefore lays claim to offering the best game viewing in the Sabi Sands. This is true to an extent, and you will certainly have excellent Big Five game viewing if you visit MalaMala. But keep in mind that the quality of your game viewing has a lot to do with the quality of your safari guide. And at MalaMala (as is the case at most lodges) there are a number of excellent guides and a number of average, inexperienced guides. Most of their safari guides have less than a year of experience in the industry. Also, a peculiar tradition at MalaMala is that the tracker sits on the back of the vehicle, rather than on the tracker seat up front. This means he misses a lot of tracks and often spots animals after the vehicle has gone past already. At night, the tracker or spotter shines the spotlight from side to side and this lights up the vehicle as it sweeps past, which some people find distracting (especially if they wear glasses, as the light reflects inside the lenses).

That said, MalaMala offers superb opportunities for game viewing and the surrounding bush is beautiful. MalaMala has three camps - Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's. Of these three, we recommend Rattray's Camp. Each luxury unit overlooks the Sand River, and has a private viewing deck and plunge pool. The suites have modern his and hers bathrooms with huge double shower. A widescreen TV, DVD player and optional notebook with internet access are also available in your room. The king-size four poster bed with mosquito net will ensure a comfortable night's sleep. Game drives are included and only 4 guests are taken on each land rover, ensuring personal attention and greater flexibility. Rattray's Camp is a great safari destination for the discerning traveler, and a perfect honeymoon destination. The rate at Rattray's Camp is $875 USD per person sharing.

The rate at Sable Camp is $775 USD per person sharing per night, and this camp also overlooks the Sand River. The lodge has spacious luxury suites with his and hers bathrooms, inviting lounge and dining areas overlooking the river, as well as a refreshing swimming pool.

MalaMala Main Camp is less luxurious and the rooms are older. The camp has a large viewing deck, a swimming pool and a gymnasium. The lounge area is huge and comfortably furnished in typical African safari style. The bar is well-stocked but a bit cramped. The rate at MalaMala Main Camp is $575 USD per person per night sharing.
